Attention Deficit Disorder Treatment Options

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity (ADHD) are classified as developmental disorders.  They are more frequently diagnosed in boys than girls and symptoms typically start before seven years of age.

It is felt that this disorder occurs in 3 to 5% of children and 30 to 50% of the symptoms continue up until adulthood.

There are three subgroups of this Attention Deficit Disorder:

  1. ADHD with Hyperactivity and Impulsivity
  2. ADHD with Primary Symptoms of Inattentiveness
  3. ADHD with Combined Hyperactivity, Impulsivity and Inattentiveness

Hyperactivity
Includes such symptoms as non-stop talking, the need to be in constant motion and tendencies to fidget and squirm in one’s seat.

Impulsivity
Symptoms such as a lack of patience, a diminished capacity for impulse control and tendencies to have trouble listening, often blurting out answers before the questions can be properly composed

Inattentiveness
Displayed by such concerns as the ability to pay attention to details, difficulties listening when spoken to, tendencies to be easily distracted and tendencies to keep things unorganized, increasing the likelihood of misplacing and losing possessions.

Our practice has clinicians who are expert in both the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.  Often, a psychological evaluation is of benefit. As the areas of impairment become delineated, treatment can be more effectively directed to the areas of concern.  Often there are accompanying problems of a learning disability and these, too, can be more accurately described with the psychological evaluation.
